Decking: plan boards and structure separately
Board quantity depends on deck width, board width, gaps and the direction of the layout. Joists, beams, posts, footings, fixings and edge details are separate decisions. A board calculator can estimate surface material, but spans and structural framing must suit the actual product and load.
Fencing: allow for real boundaries
Fence panels and posts are measured along the line of the boundary, but corners, slopes, gates and end posts change the count. Check the precise property boundary and local rules before ordering. Include post-mix, fixings, gravel boards and gate hardware where the chosen system requires them.
Weather and ground matter
Choose exterior-rated materials and compatible fixings. Consider drainage, ventilation, frost movement and the ground condition. A level, stable base and correct clearances often matter more to longevity than adding another decorative board.
Use supplier installation guidance for the exact deck or fence system. Product dimensions and required spacing vary.
